Do Gun Free Zones Keep Us Safe?

Over the last year “gun free zones" has been a popular topic. There are those that believe setting up the zones will provide a place where people can feel safe against gun violence. On the surface it appears to be a reasonable request but the application of the request depends solely on all who enter the zone will follow the rule and therein is the problem. We have in our society those that do not follow rules, obey laws or care about what others think or want; they are called criminals.
The problem we are faced with is that the mainstream media will not report the truth. What is the truth? Eric Dietz, Ph.D., the former director of Homeland Security for the state of Indiana and 22-year Army veteran said recently, "Since the 1950s, all but two mass shootings have occurred in locations where victims were restricted from carrying weapons for self-defense." The truth is these zones make one feel good in setting them up but does nothing to solve the problem of someone obsessed with killing others carrying out their goal.
We need to rid ourselves of these zones and find other solutions. I do not want to feel good I want people to be safe. The solution has many facets and simply banning guns is not one of them because it simply will not work. There are too many guns in the world and there is always someone, some place, willing to make and sell them. The war on drugs has taught us that valuable lesson.
Below is a summary of the truth regarding “gun free zones" from three different perspectives.
  • A “gun free zone" disarms those that follow the law so that those who do not follow the law can use a gun against the those who followed the law.
  • A “gun free zone" provides guaranteed safety for the criminal
  • A “gun free zone" endangers those that observe the rule
